Is it Hereditary? Genetics and Your Personal Family History of Cancer

Tawanna St. Lewis, MS, Certified Genetic Counselor

Phelps Hospital Northwell Health

Thursday, April 18/6:00-7:30 PM

In celebration of National Minority Cancer Awareness Night, all are invited to join the women of Sistah’s Circle as we welcome Tawanna St. Lewis to Gilda’s Club. Cancer is a genetic disease that is caused by certain changes to genes that control the way our cells function, especially how they grow and divide. Genetic tests for hereditary cancer syndromes can tell whether an individual or their family has a gene variant that predisposes them to cancer, but not everyone who inherits the mutation will necessarily develop cancer. This leads to fewer individuals who qualify for testing actually completing genetic testing for hereditary cancer. Please join us to learn more about genetics and hereditary cancer syndromes. Sign up required.

Membership is free; you do not need a referral. Just call 914.644.8844 to get started. Everything offered at Gilda’s Club is free of charge.

Gilda’s Club Westchester is located at 80 Maple Avenue in the center of White Plains. Anyone touched by cancer – any type of cancer – is welcome to walk through our red doors in search of support, information, and camaraderie.
